A second. I mean

a minute. Then a day

or two. Longer,

like years. There

grows a tree

in paradise

and children say things.

What do they know,

those adorable little morons?

The puppet dances

all this way and that,

loose-jointed, head

flopping side to side,

in his commedia dell’arte costume,

a song in his heart,

and he is happy to be there

on the outskirts of town,

dancing like a puppet

with tears in his eyes

that see the tears from inside,

where he is pulling his own strings.
